Under 11s 2000

To bring to an end to our series of what the Villa teams was doing 10 years ago we have three match reports for the under 11s from March 2000. The team was managed by Mike Bridge who also managed the under 14s.

The under 11s first season in the Reddish League had started full of promise untill new rules for players at acdamies had robbed the team of Ryan Crowther and James Tunnicliffe which was a major blow for the team but new additions Jack Halsall, Danny Henry and in January Carl Greatbanks made up for the loss so in Febuary the boys were well placed in the league and still in the cup.

The first report is of the cup quarter final versus Denton Villa this was a replay as the first game was abandend after 30 minutes at Denton with Villa one nil up. The abandoned first game was a story in its self. It had been pouring down all week and we were not sure if the game was on as a lot of games had been called off but when we arrived at the Denton ground, which was on a hill the pitch was in good condition and the Denton manger was eager to play the game.

The game kicked off with Villa dominating the the first 20 minutes it was no shock when Greatbanks pulled the ball back from the bye line to give Henry a tap in, giving Villa the lead.

Then came two surprise’s. The first surprise was that Villa were so on top that they didn’t score again and the second when a gentleman ran up the hill and insited that game be stopped because Tameside Council had called off all games that day.

It turned out that he worked for the council and lived at the bottom of the hill and while having his breakfast he been noticed us playing and being a dedicated council employee thought he should intervene on behalf of the council.

Funnily enough the Denton manager was only to pleased to agree with him and the match was abandoned.
